Why they matter – and what they mean for your hygiene systems
When it comes to professional-grade hygiene, not all products are created equal.
That’s why we’re proud to say that several of our antibacterial and antiviral soaps and sanitisers meet key EN Certification standards – providing proven protection that’s trusted across sectors.
In this guide, we’ll explore what EN Certification really means, why it matters for your business, and which Modu Hygiene products are tested to meet these essential European standards.
What are EN Standards?
EN stands for European Norm. It’s a standard developed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), alongside other regional bodies such as CENELEC and ETSI.
These standards set out clear technical specifications and testing methods to ensure that products meet consistent levels of safety, performance and interoperability across all 34 member countries.
For commercial hygiene, EN standards are a powerful way to ensure quality, reduce risk, and meet customer and regulatory expectations across multiple sectors, from healthcare to hospitality.
Why EN Certification matters
Trusted performance, Europe-wide
EN Certification removes technical barriers to trade by replacing conflicting national standards (like the old British BS or German DIN).
A product tested to an EN standard is recognised across Europe – so you can be confident it meets strict, uniform performance criteria.
Proven safety and quality
EN standards define how a product should perform and how it should be tested. For example, in hygiene, they specify the exact conditions and contact times needed to verify bactericidal or viricidal claims. That means no vague promises – just proven efficacy you can trust.
Compliance with EU law
Some EN Standards are what’s known as harmonised standards, developed to support EU legislation. Products that comply can claim a ‘presumption of conformity’ with relevant EU directives and apply the CE Mark, where required.
EN Certifications for hygiene products
At Modu Hygiene, we carefully select formulations that have been tested to key EN standards for soaps and hand sanitisers.
Here’s a quick overview of what those standards mean:
EN1276 – Bactericidal activity
This standard tests how effectively a product kills bacteria. To pass, it must reduce the number of viable bacteria by at least 99.999% (a 5-log reduction) under defined conditions.
EN13727 – Bactericidal activity in medical settings
Similar to EN1276, but tested under conditions more relevant to medical and surgical environments – including higher organic soiling.
EN1499 – Hygienic handwash
Tests how well a handwash product removes bacteria from the hands in real-life use. It compares the test product to plain soap and shows whether it’s significantly more effective.
EN14476 – Virucidal activity
This standard tests whether a product is effective against viruses, including enveloped viruses like coronaviruses. Products must achieve a ≥4 log (99.99%) reduction in viral count.
